About Moorabbin Obedience Dog Club

Established in 1972, Moorabbin Obedience Dog Club (MODC) has been helping dogs and their people learn, train and enjoy life together for more than 50 years.

We’re a friendly community club offering training and activities for dogs at different stages of their journey, including Pre-Puppy, Obedience, Agility and Rally. Whether you’re welcoming your first puppy into the family, working on everyday manners, or aiming for the competition ring, there’s a place for you at MODC.

Positive training, for life

Our training focuses on positive reinforcement, using things dogs value such as food, toys and praise to encourage and reward desirable behaviour.

We also use negative punishment, which simply means removing or withholding something rewarding when a dog makes an unwanted choice. Used appropriately, these methods help dogs understand what we want from them while keeping training clear, rewarding and engaging.

But training isn’t just about teaching commands. We believe a well-socialised dog is better equipped to confidently navigate everyday life. Socialisation doesn’t stop when a puppy graduates from puppy classes. It continues throughout a dog's life, helping them become comfortable around different people, dogs, environments and experiences.

More than just training

MODC is also a trialling club, giving members the opportunity to take their training into competition. We host our own Obedience, Agility and Rally trials each year, and over the past five decades, many MODC dogs and handlers have successfully competed at the highest levels.

For some members, competition is the goal. For others, it’s simply about having a well-behaved dog who can enjoy a trip to the park, a café visit or a walk with the family.
